Luigi Manfredi is currently a Senior Researcher Assistant at the Institute Of Medical Science and Technology (IMSaT). He took his master degree in Computer Science Engineering at the University of Pisa (Italy) and a PhD in Biorobotics Science and Engineering in 2001 and 2008 respectively. Since 2001 he has been working in the industrial field in particular the design and the manufacturing of electronic systems for digital control on robotic platforms. In 2004 he worked at the ARTS Lab (Advanced Robotics Technology and Systems Laboratory) of the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna (Pisa, Italy) and IMT (Institute for Advanced Studies) of Lucca, Italy. He was involved in the research on biorobotic systems, and the sensory motor control scheme based on predictive models and/or machine learning. Especially research on locomotion control (Central Patter Generator), ocular movement and preshaping/grasping of objects by neurophysiological model and neural network. In 2008 he joined in the CRIM Lab (Center of Research In Microengineering) at the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna (Pisa, Italy). He was involved in research on design and the implementation of mechatronic systems, digital hardware for control of multi-linked and flexible robots. He studied the design and implementation of a neurophysiological model for CPG (Central Pattern Generator). He was involved in many European Projects (LAMPETRA, ANGELS, REPLICATOR, COCORO). He is a member of the IEEE, of the Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, of the Robotics & Automation Society and the Control Systems Society.
Research
Robotic capsule for painless hydro-colonoscopy. He is the project coordinator of the CODIR project (www.codir.org), which proposes an interdisciplinary research to develop a robotic hydro colonoscopy;
Lesion localization and navigation for minimal access robotically-assisted laparoscopic surgery.
